Rigid  Polyurethane first cam to our attention in 1992. At this time it was being used to make Bend Limiters like the ones below:

This application places some very high loads on the individual elements requiring considerable strength without brittleness. Also, for long life the material has to resist hydrolysis and attack by marine organisms. This ability was already being demonstrated by the Bend Limiters suggesting it would be the ideal material for Sub-Sea enclosures. This was initially proven with a prototype housing tested to destruction, the long term durability has been demonstrated in the twenty years since.
